Sherpa are also called Sharwa who are about 150,000 in number and dwels people of Nepal.Sherpa are major Ethnic group who live in high mountains of himalayas in northern Nepal.They are well known for being guides,to trekkers who want to climb Mount Everest and other highest mountains in the world.They are hardworking,brave and peaceful people.Nowadays,many sherpa are incontact with western and their life and culture has changed drastically.
Location Of Sherpa:
Sherpa's are mainly located in Khumbu region that lie in southern part of Mount Everest.They also live in east of Khulung.the valley of Dudhkoshi,Rowaling rivers,langtnag helambu region and north of kathmandu is major places where sherpa are found.They are originally from Tibet who migrated to Nepal and himalaya thousands of year.These people are small in stature and fair in complexion with distinctive facial features like people of Tibetian Origin.During the winter month people descend to lower elevation while people return their village in new year festival.They managed their life preparing fields and sowing crops.
Language,Culture And Religions Of Sherpa:
Sherpali or Sherpa is major language of these ethnic group which is dialect of tibetian.Although sherpali language is heavely borrow from neighbouring language it belongs to Tibeto Burman and branch of Sino-Tibetan language family.The sherpa use Tibetan script for writting and Nepali language while dealing with other peoples.Due to the influence of tourists many sherpas nowadays are fluent in English as well.
Abominable Snowman known as Yeti is unique element in sherpas folklore.Yeti were neumorus in past and attract and terrorize local villagers.
Many sherpas belongs to Buddhism.They are local dieties borrow from pre buddhist born religion.They also believe in neumorus god and demons.They have worshiped Buddha as fabric of rituals.Their location is in Great himalayan mountains which are worshiped as Gods.
Sherpa called Mount Everest Chomolunga and worship is as the mother of the world.Mount Makalu is worshiped as Deity Shiva.Every mountains in the himalaya are worshiped and prayed as god.Lama's are spritual leaders and religious practitioners living in the village.Lama perform every ceremony in Sherpa's like wedding,Death rituals, and other house hold function.These people believes in super natural power and spirit.Monastries and Gumbas are manjor religious aspects in Sherpa religion.There are many monastries and gumbas scattered through out the himalaya which are religious institution.There are communities of lama's or monks who take vows of celibacy and lead a life searching for truth and religious enlightenment.They are respected and supported by large community and their contact with outside world is limited.They invite many people during annuals festivals and funerals and read scared texts during funnerals wishing the better life of passed out once in the heaven.
Food And Clothings Of Sherpa:
As per the living status and location their diets is mainly dominated by starchy foods,supplimented by vegetables,spicies and meat occasionally.Sherpa's drink tibetan tea which is served with salt and butter.Lunch include boiled potatos which are dipped in the grand species sometime stiff dougf is made from grain and eaten with thin sause made from vegetables spices and meat.Shakpa is trpical dinner made from potatos and vegetables while dairy products especially butter,milk and curds are important in diets.
Main clothes of Sherpa's are similar to Tibetans.Both men and women wear long inner shirt over a pant like garment made of wool.they also wear Bakhuu that reaches below the knees and fastens at the sides.They wear high wooled boots with hide soles.Women usually wear multi color striped appron to cover front and back of their bodies below the waist.Both married and unmarried women wear appron while married women wear front appron.Various ornaments and distinctive cap called Shamahu is famous among Sherpa Women.Nowadays these typical clothes are disappearing among young sherpas who have worked with mountain expedition so,they wear altitude clothings.
Education And Employment Of Sherpas:
Only very few sherpas have formal schooling in the past but nowadays primary schools are being introduce.There are very few sherpa wo can read and write.
Traditionally,agriculture is major economics activities of Sherpa of Khumbu region.They raise maize,barley,Buckwheat and potatos.Due to high altitude farming is difficul.Sherpa raise Yak, and cattle that survive in high elevation.Yak is major animal to provide wool and milk.They sold milk and butter for grain.These animals are use for ploughing.Sherpas are famous for trade between Nepal and Tibet as their location and language schools.Salt,sheep wools,meat and yak products are brought to Nepal from Tibet by Sherpas.
Sherpa's are reputed as excellent mountain guides and porters as they have excellent climbing and expedition skill.Trekking and mountain expedition have brought new source of income for comfortable living.So,many young sherpas are nowadays involve with trekking industries for employment.
